The first graders have been learning all about animal adaptations. One of the adaptations they have studied is how blubber helps animals that live in cold climates to survive. Today, they conducted an experiment to see just how important blubber is. First, Mrs. McGowan filled two buckets with snow. In one of the buckets, she put in an empty Ziplock bag. In the other bucket, Mrs. McGowan filled a Ziplock bag full of Crisco shortening to represent an animals blubber. Then, the students stuck their hands in each of the buckets to observe and feel any differences. The students learned that the Ziplock bag filled with the shortening protected their hands from the cold of the snow...and they connected this knowledge and discussed just how important blubber is to the animals who live in the coldest environments!!!
